Grade: A … As a son of a (semi retired) stuntman, I grew up interested in watching my dad perform stunts for various movies throughout his career. He was never tasked to do anything too crazy, but stunts like stunt driving and hanging out of a window were sometimes required. Many of my uncles were stuntmen and I was always surrounded by the entertainment industry.
While I was too young to watch any of “The Fall Guy” television series with Lee Majors that ran from 1981-1986, “The Fall Guy” movie felt as if it was tailor made for me and my dad. Or anyone who has an interest in stunt work.
In “The Fall Guy” movie, Ryan Reynolds steps into the role of Colt Seavers. Colt is a fallen from grace stuntman who needs to track down Tom Ryder, the star of the movie that his ex-girlfriend is directing. Colt is Tom’s stunt double and without Tom present for filming, Colt’s ex-girlfriend’s (Jody Moreno, played by Emily Blunt) movie cannot be made.
As Colt tracks down Tom for Jody, Colt unravels (and needs to derail) a sinister plan all while trying to get back into Jody’s heart.
“The Fall Guy” serves up a huge amount of eighties nostalgia. From eighties music to the “Miami Vice Stunt Show” at Universal Studios, the audience is treated to a great time.
Naturally, stunts are bountiful in the movie and while Ryan Gosling did do a few stunts himself for the movie, including a backwards twelve story fall from a building, Gosling needed a stunt double to make the movie. The audience will see stunts ranging from crazy car chases, to hand to hand combat, to gunfights, and of course high falls.
The movie is well made and Gosling did an excellent job playing Colt’s character. “The Fall Guy” reminded me of the “Rush Hour” movies in the respect that both movies expertly married action and comedy for the perfect blend.
Rush to your local theater to fall into your theater seat to watch “The Fall Guy.” You will have a wonderful time laughing and hanging onto the edge of your seat all while getting a peek behind the curtain as to how movies are made and how some stunts are performed.
