The Invite… Should you RSVP with a Yes?

Grade: A-… In my opinion, it takes a lot to hold the attention of a general audience for nearly two hours with only four characters in a single room for the duration of a movie. Backed by a terrific screenplay, incredible performances by the entire cast and an engaging story, Olivia Wilde’s “The Invite” passed that test with flying colors.

“The Invite” is about a married couple (Joe and Angela) whose marriage is in shambles. They invite their upstairs neighbors over for an intimate dinner party. Right off the bat you notice that Joe and Angela (played by Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde, respectively) have zero communication in their marriage and there are clearly deeper issues afoot with the marriage. Once their new neighbors, Piña and Hawk (Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton) arrive the audience is “treated” to a very unhinged night full of insults, sexuality, and realization.

The lines are delivered at such a rapid pace, sometimes it is hard to keep up with the humor and drama that make up this fun “dramedy.” It seems no topic is off-limits as the audience gets to be a fly on the wall for a heated discussion ranging from curiosity to outright partner swapping that definitely challenge both relationships. One minute they are engaged in a civil discussion then the next minute, a contentious argument that will tempt anyone to put a lawyer on retainer.

I can imagine this movie will be a serious contender for multiple Oscars come Oscar season. The beauty of it is that “The Invite” is not a flashy movie by any means. Its setting is pretty bare bones, much like a play, but it packs a serious punch and delivers an incredible experience to the audience that may even have some couples questioning their relationship.

The movie is hard to talk about in depth because I would prefer to keep it spoiler free and I just encourage everyone to go to the movies to experience the chaos with as large of a group as possible.

Absolutely RSVP with a “YES” and go experience one of the best gems of the summer box office!
